Why this site exists
Naming a child is one of the few decisions parents make before they meet the
person it belongs to. The Name Notebook exists to make that decision less exhausting:
long, properly sorted lists of names with real meanings and origins, plus the
data on how common a name actually is.
Who writes it

How the lists are put together
Name meanings and origins are researched and checked against reference
sources. Popularity figures — rankings, how many babies were given a name in
a year, when a name peaked — come from published records of the United States
Social Security Administration, which releases national baby-name data every
year. Where we show a chart, it is drawn from that data directly.
Where the SSA reports nothing for a name in a given year, that means fewer
than five babies were registered with it. We leave those years blank on our
charts rather than smoothing over them.
